Real Weddings: Kendra and Brent

One Virginia couple’s “elegant picnic” wedding is a sweet and preppy summer celebration.

Kendra and Brent first met while working summer jobs at Clyde’s in Reston—she was a hostess, and he was a part-time server. “Brent would come up to the hostess stand and flirt with me during our shifts,” says Kendra. Brent proposed in December 2010 during the pair’s annual visit to the National Christmas Tree in DC. Brent offered to take a photo of Kendra in front of the tree if she took one of him. “As I was about to take his picture, he spun around and pulled out a sign,” she says. “It said, ‘You are amazing just the way you are.’ As I looked at the camera screen, Brent whipped out another sign and told me to take another picture. The sign said, ‘Will You Marry Me?’, and shortly afterward, Brent got down on his knee! I couldn’t believe it was actually happening.” Eight months later, on August 14, the Arlington couple married at Thomas Birkby House in Leesburg. “The two must-haves for our wedding venue were a historical house—because I was a history major in college and I love the architecture of the DC area—and a tent,” says Kendra. “The Birkby House was actually the first venue Brent and I looked at, and we both loved it right away.” They kept things casual, deciding on an “elegant picnic” theme. “I wanted baskets, fruit and cheese platters, burlap, pies, and fried chicken,” says the bride.

The afternoon wedding was held outdoors; the couple wed under an arch bedecked with roses, raffia, and ivy. Brent and Kendra wrote their own vows and didn’t share them with each other until the ceremony. “Some of the highlights were that I promised our lives would be filled with laughter, joy, music, and adventure, and [that I’d] listen to Brent when he was clearly being the rational one,” says Kendra. “Brent promised to eat with me when he’s not hungry, nap with me when he’s not tired, and always follow me when I ask him to leave me alone.” After the ceremony, the 143 guests enjoyed a cocktail hour featuring a fruit and cheese platter, bruschetta, Virginia ham biscuits, and signature drinks created by a family friend—a watermelon cocktail called the “Pucker Up,” and “Arnie in the Rye,” a bourbon, lemonade, and iced tea concoction.

The tented reception featured floral arrangements of hydrangeas, spray roses, and ivy placed in blue Mason jars that belonged to Kendra’s grandmother and Brent’s mother. “We wanted the centerpieces to have a natural, handpicked quality,” says the bride. A buffet meal of beef tenderloin, orzo with pine nuts—and yes, fried chicken—was served. The couple cut a small carrot cake (Brent’s favorite), and a variety of pies were served for dessert. Kendra and Brent performed their first dance to “The Way You Look Tonight” by Tony Bennett, and everyone danced to a mix of tunes. “We had a great mix of young guests and a fun-loving middle-aged crowd,” says Kendra. “The dance floor was busy most of the night.” As gifts, guests received s’mores kits—cellophane bags filled with graham crackers, a small skewer, a marshmallow, with a navy tag that read, “Kendra & Brent: S’More Love.”

inspiring day at Camp Dogwood Summer Academy, www.anbryce.org/campdogwood! This is the second summer we have held flower arranging workshops for the campers and counselors, creating floral masterpieces and laughing our way through. The campers are so attentive and eager to learn new skills.

It's uplifting to see the variety of designs that come out of the same pool of materials. One of the counselors attends DC's Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts and serenaded us with his lovely voice and musical talents. What a joy it was to hear him sing! Our hot summer has caused an earlier than usual aging process in the hydrangea harvest this year. So many of our blue blooms are looking greener with a burgundy cast and the pinks are

Heavenly Hydrangeas Floral Design was inspired by the amazing story of a young Malawian who, at age 14, built a windmill for electricity for his village. William Kamkwamba had to drop out of school due to famine in Malawi but was not deterred from his studies. He taught himself physics from diagrams (as he did not know English) in books borrowed from a nearby village library. He then managed to build a windmill from found materials (sandals, bicycle wheels, old wires) which lit the first lightbulb in his village. The long, low arrangement pictured below was one of three in an ensemble that graced a 22' long table at a Supreme Court dinner. The Columbine is Swaying

The columbine is showing off in the garden this week. It self-sows and cross pollinates producing unusual color combinations which is always a welcome surprise. My favorite, a dark burgundy, did not come up this year but I have saved seeds from last year so I can sprinkle them in the beds and hope they germinate. I find with the spring rains, the slugs come out to play. A natural remedy to combat these critters, is to dig a hole, place an empty can or glass jar in the ground, and fill the container with beer, leaving a one inch lip from the top of the container. This way, the slugs come for a drink of beer, and cannot get out. Also, spring is a wonderful time to start a compost bin and recycle all your old natural food scraps. Vegetable and fruit waste, egg shells and coffee grounds all can go into a composter. Grass clippings and leaves should also be added. You can purchase a composter at any nursery or garden center, online OR make your own. I like using an old garbage can as described in this link: www.ehow.com/how_16876_make-compost-bin.html Do not use any meat in the bin as it will attract racoons and smell. The organic material will decompose and become 'gardener's gold' or the best soil for your beds. Use it to top dress your gardens or to mix in with your existing soil when planting new plants. Enjoy! Have fun getting dirty. Bachelor's Button, above, brings a vibrant purple color to the garden. Lily of the Valley, below, adds a lovely fragrance to the beds and the delicate blooms are just lovely.

14 Grandchildren participate in Chevy Chase wedding!

The Chapel at Blessed Sacrament Church in Chevy Chase was the perfect setting for these lovely, classic topiaries and candelbra collars of deep purple lisianthus, lavender spray roses, and white hypericum berries. One of my favorite bouquets for the bride (grandmother of the 14 participants in the bridal party!) is a bountiful ensemble of white peonies, ranunculas, calla lilies and cymbidium orchids. Just stunning. Each of the grandaughters carried a posey of baby green hydrangeas, purple anemonies, white ranunculas and light lavender mini hyacinth wrapped with a white organza Midori ribbon and purple pearl pins. Gorgeous!

Sprouting in the Spring Garden

A rare and treasured early spring woodland plant, Variegated Trillium is almost completely up in my shade beds. I adore their unusual pointed blossoms. Virginia Bluebells are among my favorite early spring blooms. They are a deep purple, naturalize beautifully in wooded areas and disappear completely after blooming so there is space in the garden for other plants. False Bleeding Heart, Corydalis Elata, is another delicate early spring bloom that I just love. It also naturalizes nicely in partial or full shade. I also have pink and yellow varieties. And how can overlook one of the first signs of spring in the garden - crocuses. Look at this gorgeous purple color below.

With spring upon us, the crocuses, forsythia, and daffodils are showing off in the beds. I am full of anticipation as each morning I look out at the back garden and see more greenery emerging. Last night's Bar Mitzvah dinner for 200 at The Press Club in DC was rockin' with entertainment by NYX Entertainment. Howie Teger of NYX Entertainment knows how to keep the crowd on the dance floor. Landon Ladies Floral Design Workshop

Today at the Landon School Ladies Floral Design Workshop, everyone had lots of fun creating topiaries and cigar boxes filled with protea, mokara orchids, stock, button mums, and foliages such as seeded eucalyptus, salal leaves and boxwood. Despite the same direction and materials, each participant put a unique stamp on her design. As you can see from these pictures, designs dazzled the imagination with unusual flower and color combinations. Students finished their creations with Midori ribbons and carpet mosses. I love these workshops. They inspire me.

Our stunning creation of masses of pink + orange ranunuculas is named in honor of our angelic new First Daughter, Sasha Obama, who charmed us on Tuesday in her JCrewCuts outfit of pink and orange. Ranunculas' petals are delicate and abundant, also a reminder of Sasha's youthful exuberance! We love you, Sasha.

What a picture of unity it was to look out on the Washington Mall and see

the sea of millions. Words cannot adequately express our feelings on this

great day in our history. I was particularly inspired by these words that President Obama

said in his inaugural address,

"On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose

over the politics of discord....The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit,

to chose our better history..."

And I just love his beautiful family! The absolutely adorable Sasha and Malia

have already inspired me to design a pink and orange bouquet called 'the Malia'.

Now let's all come together to do our parts in making our world a better place.

unexpected color combinations. Sometimes pairing

unlikely colors and flowers result in pleasing surprises!

Aged hydrangeas combined with 'black' roses

and dark plum callas, berries and foliages

produce a striking ensemble. Love these rich

hues.

One of my favorite designs is 'patchwork quilt'

of flowers. Experiment with different flowers,

berries and fruits and vegetables to create a fun

floral quilt of your own!
